  • Helsinki Subway Western Expansion

    The project involves around 14 km of tunnels, 7 stations and the removal of around 3 million cubic meters of rock. The tunnels and stations will be excavated by drill & blast and reinforced with rockbolts and shotcrete. A part of the tunnels and the Koivusaari station will be located under the sea. The metro line travels mostly under urban areas with high rise buildings and other critical structures.

    1- The aboveground encapsulation plant where spent nuclear fuel is received, dried and packed into final disposal canisters, and
    2- The repository located deep inside the bedrock, in which the most important section are the tunnels where the encapsulated spent nuclear fuel is disposed of.

    3D FEM analysis was performed to investigate the overall stability of the hard rock excavations in depths up to 500m. And to optimize rock support system. Also impact of vibration due to blasting and groundwater level on underground cavern was simulated.
