About Hernani Viaduct cable-stayed bridge

Piles are now being installed for the new Hernani Viaduct near San Sebastian in north east Spain, which is being built as part of the country's high-speed railway network. This particular structure will be part of the new line in the Basque country, which will connect Bilbao-Vitoria with San Sebastian and in future will also provide the link across the border to the French high-speed rail system.

The Hernani Viaduct is just over 1.2km long in total, and it runs along the valley parallel to the Urumea River, crossing it three times with spans that increase in length from 39m to 120m due to its skew angle. Two of these are cable-stayed spans of 120m and 68m.

Main challenge of the project

The main challenges faced in the analysis of the structure included the construction stage analysis, analysis of prestressing loads, the moving loads from trains, dynamic analysis, seismic analysis and non-linear analysis of the steel towers. Global and detailed models of the bridge were developed using Midas Civil software

Application of midas Civil

Midas Civil Software was used both for the required seismic analysis, including time-history analysis, and for the dynamic analysis according to Spanish Railway Code for Loads IAPF-07.

Midas Civil Software helped both for the analysis of the deck structure and the cable-stayed spans, and for the detailed analysis of the foundations. Detailed analysis of the infl uence of the foundation construction was carried out in relation to its proximity to the existing highway bridge, the railway bridges crossing below and in between the piers
